The EDGE Waterfront Park - Williamsburg, Brooklyn
The Williamsburg waterfront, long dominated by industry and its decay for over a century–made it a menace to the contemporary development of Brooklyn. A zoning change to the Greenpoint-Williamsburg waterfront under Mayor Michael Bloomberg mandates waterfront access with a 'shore public walkway" and waterfront parks like The Edge. The park at the EDGE seeks to bring people to the river and link the ecosystem with the fabric of the community. As landscape architect for both the new residential towers and the public waterfront park, Martin and several teams at W Architecture ensured that the park act as a public space catalyst in the ongoing waterfront development of Brooklyn. The Edge was the first park to open along the waterfront and has been an important catalyst in the ongoing development of the neighborhood.
Fifth Street Square - Calgary
Part of a $1.2 billion development by Calgary Municipal Land Corporation in Calgary, 5th Street Square is located at the intersection of 7th Avenue and 5th Street SE. This urban space incorporates a diagonal pedestrian route – “the Riff” – with connections to other pedestrian paths in East Village. It provides vital public space for festivals, community gatherings, concerts and food events; all serving to enhance the sense of place as the East Village develops around the square. An inviting place to gather with friends for coffee or just gather one’s thoughts, lying on the grass slopes on a busy day. Martin designed and managed the work through construction , working directly with the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation and major stakeholders.
East Village Riverwalk, Phase 2 - Calgary
A 4 kilometer pedestrian and bicycle path at the edge of the Bow and Elbow Rivers is being built as part of the Riverwalk Master Plan, which will revitalize the River’s District and East Village in downtown Calgary. Working directly with the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation management and major stakeholders like the Calgary Stampede, City Councilors and various city, provincial and federal agencies, Martin managed the design and engineering of Phase 2 of this project, roughly 1.5km of riverfront promenade, bike path, pavilion, overlooks, playgrounds, new park space, ecological design and embankment reinforcement along the Elbow River in the center of Calgary. The concept statement for this stage is “places in the forest. The biophilic design and programming supports this mission.
The Riverwalk will promote pedestrian and bicycle use as well as contributing to flood mitigation.
MUSEVI Museo Elevado de Villahermosa - Villahermosa, Mexico
Villahermosa is the capital city of Tabasco in Mexico. Centro, the municipal authority tasked with public works and management, worked with TEN Arquitectos and W Architecture (where Martin was an Associate) to develop a Master Plan and public space plan to serve as an economic development, ecological and urban revitalization tool. Phase 1 of the master plan saw the implementation of a major public amphitheater, traffic control measures, a lakefront promenade, square and elevated open-air museum called MUSEVI Elevado de Villahermosa. MUSEVI is phase one of a three-phase master plan for Paseo de las ilusiones. The museum, public space and amphitheater connect two physically separated lakes, Vaso cencalli and Lagoon of Illusions. Martin's team made recommendations to improve the ecological conditions of the lakes, which included phyto-remediation and "upstream" remediation with vegetated freshwater wetlands and dozens of biological filtration zones at the sources of contamination. The team created a public space action-plan for subsequent phases and an ecological-cultural route to encourage new forms of tourism and investment along the main boulevard, Paseo de las Ilusiones. The museum and amphitheater has become a new focal point for Tomas Garrido Park and the City of Villahermosa. The public space and landscape plan was the core part of work for our team.
