Blue Pier - St. Petersburg, FL

Blue Pier is a proposal for the City of St. Petersburg, a finalist in the competition to replace the iconic pier in the city. The Blue Pier design is rooted in joining the ecology, local cultural norms and the history of the pier to create a world-class attraction that serves as an economic development mechanism and rebirth for the cultural, ecological and economic life of the ailing pier. At Blue Pier we combine the urban with an understanding of the natural forces shaping the waterfront. Integrating the confluence of these parts is a 21st century idea.

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Headquarters - New York

Tarrytown, New York is home to one of the world's most innovative biotech and pharmaceutical companies in the world. Martin worked with BioMed Realty Trust, Regeneron and Perkins+Will on a new master plan for their campus, expanding with more than 300,000 square feet of laboratory, research and office space and a campus landscape plan that utilized state-of-the-art materials and ecological design to mitigate impact to the site at the edge of a the Saw Mill River river, a dangerous flood-prone waterbody. The plan allowed for the creation of over 400 new jobs at Regeneron and paved the way for a recent announcement of another expansion of 1 million square feet.

St. Patrick's Island - Calgary

St. Patrick’s Island is a revitalized 31-acre park and public space, the centerpiece of the new East Village in Calgary. A biophilia master plan – a landscape design approach that nurtures the bond between people and nature; the park has won dozens of awards in North America including the "best public space in Canada" in 2015 by the Canadian Institute of Planners. Martin, while at W Architecture, led the design team on this project, managing it through construction.

Veolia Smart City, Smart Water - Prague

City Crew is advising the Prague branch of Veolia on their smart city strategy through a benchmarking of smart city cases involving utilities and issues of citizen participation / engagement worldwide. The work includes a written report on state-of-the-art practices worldwide for smart water, and how those practices might help influence both the SWiM technology and smart citizen engagement. The work will be used as a preface to integrating Veolia's smart water dashboard with other City utilities.

World Cities Summit and Mayors Forum - Singapore, Bilbao, New York

The World Cities Summit and Mayors Forum is the Singapore government's flagship urban sustainability gathering and eco-system for urban solutions dealmaking and policy discussion, with 1,200 global decision-makers attending each edition, including Ministers, Mayors and C-suite world leaders from industry, research, philanthropic and international development organizations. Together with teams from the Centre for Liveable Cities and Urban Redevelopment Authority, Ling curated and implemented successful editions of the summit. She worked with international teams in Bilbao and New York to present the Mayors Forum, contextualizing the peer-to-peer learning forum to maximize its impact in the respective cities.

New Urban Agenda and HABITAT III - New York, Quito

The New Urban Agenda is the United Nations’ latest action-oriented document that sets global benchmarks in sustainable urban development. Ling worked as part of the Singapore delegation. She negotiated on urban issues at the intergovernmental meetings as well as developed cooperation with relevant actors to share key learnings and methodologies on urban development at the HABITAT III in Quito.

The EDGE Waterfront Park - Williamsburg, Brooklyn

The Williamsburg waterfront, long dominated by industry and its decay for over a century–made it a menace to the contemporary development of Brooklyn. A zoning change to the Greenpoint-Williamsburg waterfront under Mayor Michael Bloomberg mandates waterfront access with a 'shore public walkway" and waterfront parks like The Edge. The park at the EDGE seeks to bring people to the river and link the ecosystem with the fabric of the community. As landscape architect for both the new residential towers and the public waterfront park, Martin and several teams at W Architecture ensured that the park act as a public space catalyst in the ongoing waterfront development of Brooklyn. The Edge was the first park to open along the waterfront and has been an important catalyst in the ongoing development of the neighborhood.

Fifth Street Square - Calgary

Part of a $1.2 billion development by Calgary Municipal Land Corporation in Calgary, 5th Street Square is located at the intersection of 7th Avenue and 5th Street SE. This urban space incorporates a diagonal pedestrian route – “the Riff” – with connections to other pedestrian paths in East Village. It provides vital public space for festivals, community gatherings, concerts and food events; all serving to enhance the sense of place as the East Village develops around the square. An inviting place to gather with friends for coffee or just gather one’s thoughts, lying on the grass slopes on a busy day. Martin designed and managed the work through construction , working directly with the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation and major stakeholders.

East Village Riverwalk, Phase 2 - Calgary

A 4 kilometer pedestrian and bicycle path at the edge of the Bow and Elbow Rivers is being built as part of the Riverwalk Master Plan, which will revitalize the River’s District and East Village in downtown Calgary. Working directly with the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation management and major stakeholders like the Calgary Stampede, City Councilors and various city, provincial and federal agencies, Martin managed the design and engineering of Phase 2 of this project, roughly 1.5km of riverfront promenade, bike path, pavilion, overlooks, playgrounds, new park space, ecological design and embankment reinforcement along the Elbow River in the center of Calgary. The concept statement for this stage is “places in the forest. The biophilic design and programming supports this mission.

The Riverwalk will promote pedestrian and bicycle use as well as contributing to flood mitigation.

MUSEVI Museo Elevado de Villahermosa - Villahermosa, Mexico

Villahermosa is the capital city of Tabasco in Mexico. Centro, the municipal authority tasked with public works and management, worked with TEN Arquitectos and W Architecture (where Martin was an Associate) to develop a Master Plan and public space plan to serve as an economic development, ecological and urban revitalization tool. Phase 1 of the master plan saw the implementation of a major public amphitheater, traffic control measures, a lakefront promenade, square and elevated open-air museum called MUSEVI Elevado de Villahermosa. MUSEVI is phase one of a three-phase master plan for Paseo de las ilusiones. The museum, public space and amphitheater connect two physically separated lakes, Vaso cencalli and Lagoon of Illusions. Martin's team made recommendations to improve the ecological conditions of the lakes, which included phyto-remediation and "upstream" remediation with vegetated freshwater wetlands and dozens of biological filtration zones at the sources of contamination. The team created a public space action-plan for subsequent phases and an ecological-cultural route to encourage new forms of tourism and investment along the main boulevard, Paseo de las Ilusiones. The museum and amphitheater has become a new focal point for Tomas Garrido Park and the City of Villahermosa. The public space and landscape plan was the core part of work for our team.

Marina Bay Downtown - Singapore

Well managed waterfront business districts raise the international profile of their respective cities at the same time as they become an engine of growth and investment. Ling supported the promotion, place-making and branding efforts of then Marina Bay Development Agency, which manages the 360ha waterfront business district in Singapore. Ling coordinated between public agencies, businesses and grassroots groups to facilitate a year-round calendar of community and arts programs that enliven the waterfront, creating new value for the district’s stakeholders and for the city.

reSITE is an international platform working to exchange ideas about making cities more livable, competitive and resilient. reSITE works at the intersection of architecture, urbanism, politics, culture, and economics as a catalyst for social action and innovative leadership. The organization was founded as a startup by Martin in 2011.
